Then.... and now !

We present a few pictures showing how some places around Sittingbourne have changed over the years.

The High Street, looking East towards the George Inn, and St Michael's Church
Above, around 1900, and right, July 2004

Above, early in the last century, West Street, looking West towards the Ypres Tavern and the bottom of Park Road, and right, in July 2004. The pub was called the Railway Tavern and the police station was on the left of the picture.

Above: Cockleshell Walk looking South towards West Street in 1958, and right, in 2007, almost all buildings now demolished, the Church is the RC church in West Street, the shops are at the bottom of Ufton Lane.

Above: Dover Street 1958, looking South past Fountain Street towards West Street.

Above: similar view in 2007, towards the one way system coming from (Spring St) right to left by the new building, the tree obscuring the rest of Dover Street and the view towards West Street at the top.
Fountain Street still exists as a small road opposite this new building.

New Road, Milton Regis, looking West 1958. The Mill is behind.

Similar view today. MacDonalds is out of shot to the right.
