Answer 1

What does the name Sittingbourne mean?

There are several possible meanings of the name, nobody knows the correct answer for certain but one theory is that it means home of the slope dwellers by the stream, another is that it could have come from the area being occupied by the followers of a Saxon called Sything or Syding who lived by a stream as ‘bourne’ means stream.

Regis means belonging to the king, and in Saxon and Norman times much of Milton belonged to the king. Regis was added to the name because there are several other places called Milton in England.

Answer 6

Why is there a statue of a barge man in the High Street?

All through the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, sailing barges took paper and bricks made locally to London from Milton Creek. The barge man reminds us of how many Sittingbourne and Milton men made their living on the barges in the past.
